Buckeyes and 'Canes tune up with romps...Leftwich hurt in Steelers'
preseason finale
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Terrelle Pryor tossed three TD passes,
Brandon Saine rushed for 103 yards and two scores and second-ranked
Ohio State rolled over Marshall 42-7 in a tuneup for a big date
with Miami. Pryor completed 17 of 25 passes for 247 yards in the
Buckeyes' season opener.
MIAMI (AP) - Jacory Harris looked more than ready for Miami's
long-awaited trip to Ohio State a week from Saturday. Harris
completed 12 of 15 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns before
sitting out the second half in the 13th-ranked Hurricanes' 45-0
rout of overmatched Florida A&M.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - The NCAA has declared Alabama defensive
end Marcell Dareus ineligible for two games for accepting improper
benefits. The ruling ordered Dareus to repay $1,787 to a charity of
his choice before regaining eligibility and he will miss the
Crimson Tide's opener Saturday night against San Jose State and the
game against No. 19 Penn State the following weekend.
NEW YORK (AP) - Five-time champion Roger Federer has breezed
into the third round at the U.S. Open, serving 15 aces in beating
Andreas Beck 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. Federer has won 42 of his past 43
matches at Flushing Meadows, the only loss coming in last year's
final.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Byron
Leftwich, who was expected to start during Ben Roethlisberger's
suspension, sprained his left knee during a 19-3 exhibition win
against Carolina. If Leftwich can't play in the Steelers' Sept. 12
opener against Atlanta, coach Mike Tomlin might have to go with
third-stringer Dennis Dixon as his opening day QB.
